Tende Tunnel set for 24-hour opening from November 30: a boost for Limone Piemonte ahead of ski season
An important development for Limone Piemonte and the wider Maritime Alps region: from November 30, 2026, the new Colle di Tende Tunnel is expected to operate 24 hours a day, removing the opening-hour restrictions that have governed the cross-border connection since its reopening in June 2025.
The announcement, confirmed by Italian road authority ANAS on October 18, comes at a particularly significant time, just ahead of the 2026/2027 ski season, marking another major step towards restoring reliable access between Italy and France.
A new opportunity for winter tourism in Limone Piemonte
After years of disrupted connections, particularly following the devastating Storm Alex in October 2020 and the reconstruction works that followed, continuous tunnel access represents an important improvement for mobility between the Vermenagna and Roya valleys.
For Limone Piemonte, one of the Maritime Alps’ most established ski destinations, the change means more reliable access from France and the French Riviera, key visitor markets for the resort.
The possibility of crossing the border during evening and nighttime hours will make weekend ski trips, short winter breaks, and international travel considerably easier, potentially benefiting local hospitality businesses, restaurants, retailers, and tourism services.
Although the tunnel is expected to remain open around the clock, traffic will still operate under alternating one-way controls, regulated by traffic lights. The main improvement will be the removal of restricted opening hours.
A new chapter for Limone Piemonte’s development
Officially inaugurated on June 27, 2025, the new Tende Tunnel has already played a crucial role in restoring the connection between Piedmont and France after nearly five years of disruption.
The transition to continuous access, scheduled just as the winter season approaches, could further strengthen Limone Piemonte’s position as an Alpine destination within convenient reach of the French Riviera.
The benefits may extend beyond tourism. Improved cross-border accessibility also enhances the area’s appeal as a second-home and residential destination, supporting its long-term attractiveness to both Italian and international property buyers.
After years of restricted access, November 30 could mark the beginning of a new phase for Limone Piemonte, reconnecting the mountains with the Riviera just in time for the winter season.
